Do I need Wayform if I already have instruction files?
Not necessarily. If your repo instructions cover the context you need and your team keeps them current, keep using them.
Wayform adds shared plans and a searchable record of decisions and their reasons. It becomes useful when work moves between sessions, people, or coding agents and you want the next task to inherit what was settled.
What belongs where?
| Context | A useful place for it |
|---|---|
| Build commands, code style, repository layout | Your existing instruction files or rules |
| A feature’s approach, scope, and checks | A Wayform plan |
| A choice the team made and the reason | A recorded Wayform decision |
| A change to a previous decision | A replacement decision linked to the old one |
| The conversation that led there | Your chat; save the conclusions that future work needs |
What the coding tools already provide
Claude Code supports persistent instruction files and auto memory. Project instructions can be shared through version control. See Claude Code’s memory documentation.
Codex reads AGENTS.md instructions to guide its work. Repository and directory guidance can describe the conventions an agent should follow. See OpenAI’s AGENTS.md guide.
Cursor supports reusable rules, including project and team rules. Their scope and application depend on configuration. See Cursor’s rules documentation.
These tools already preserve useful context. Wayform gives supported clients a shared place to read and record plans and decisions; it does not require deleting their existing context mechanisms.
A small example
Your instruction file might say, “Run the auth tests before changing authentication.”
A Wayform decision might say, “Keep GitHub login for team invitations because we want one identity system.”
A plan then describes the invitation flow and how to check it. A teammate’s connected agent can retrieve the same decision before working on the next feature. See the handoff.
Avoid two conflicting sources
Keep broad, stable guidance in your instruction files. When a choice changes, update any instructions that repeat it and supersede the old Wayform record. Adding a shared service does not remove the need to maintain the information you put into it.
Wayform also adds setup, authentication, and a hosted retrieval service. If a short instruction file solves the problem, that is a reasonable place to stop. Read the storage and access details.
Questions
Do I still need CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md if I use Wayform?
Yes. Keep them for stable repo conventions like build commands, code style, and layout. Wayform holds the plans and decisions your team makes as it works.
Can Cursor team rules replace shared memory?
Rules share guidance someone writes ahead of time. Wayform records decisions as they are made, with the reason, who made them, and what replaced them, across Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex.
How do I avoid two conflicting sources?
Keep broad, stable guidance in instruction files. When a choice changes, update any instructions that repeat it and supersede the old Wayform decision.
